Donald Trump, Harris head to North Carolina

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have both been actively campaigning in North Carolina as the state has emerged as a critical battleground for the 2024 presidential election.

Trump, who has made multiple visits to the state recently, is trying to solidify his support base. In a recent AARP poll, Trump is leading Harris by a narrow margin of 50% to 47% among likely voters in North Carolina. However, this lead increases significantly among voters aged 50 and above, where Trump has a 36-point advantage with white voters over 50. Harris, on the other hand, holds a strong lead among older Black voters, with 93% supporting her (AARP).

Trump's rallies in North Carolina, including a significant event in Asheboro, have highlighted his efforts to maintain enthusiasm among his supporters despite recent changes in the electoral dynamics. His campaign has noted increased security measures following an assassination attempt, reflecting the intensity of the current political climate (Politico).

Harris' candidacy has made the race more competitive, with some polls showing her ahead or at least neck-and-neck with Trump. This shift indicates that North Carolina, which Trump won in both 2016 and 2020, is now a more contested state. Republican strategists acknowledge the tighter race but believe focusing on issues like safety and the economy will benefit Trump (Politico).

Overall, the campaigning efforts of both Trump and Harris in North Carolina underscore the state's importance in the 2024 election, with both candidates making strategic moves to win over voters in this key battleground state.
